Built as one of Fred Hess's several hostelries at Inlet, it was sold within a decade and probably not long thereafter substantially enlarged. In 1905 it was purchased by Philo Wood and renamed it Wood Hotel. The establishment remained in continuous operation until 1989 \u2013 one of the longest runs in the Adirondacks. After lying vacant for fifteen years it was refurbished and reopened in 2004. Along with Earl Covey's hotels at Big Moose and Twitchell [BG4] lakes and the Ausable Club (formerly St. Hubert's Inn) at Keene Valley [KV7], this ranks among the least altered turn-of-the-20th-century resort hotels within the Blue Line. Adjacent to the east lie two well-preserved early 20th-century cottage compounds designed for seasonal use.

Long View Lodge began as a tourist home run by Wallace and Mary Ann Emerson in the 1867 farmhouse built for his parents. The current building was erected in three months after the older one burned at the opening of the summer season in 1929. Four subsequent generations of the family operated the establishment over the next six decades.

Scopes was the developer as well as the architect of this massive pile. Building a hotel of a kind that was emblematic of a substantial urban center was an audacious move even as the village was experiencing unprecedented prosperity. Scopes sold bonds to most businesspeople in the community and many others as well. With 100 rooms, an arcade, and a grand ballroom and roof garden on the second floor, the six-story hotel was a local sensation. But it was not a financial success and nearly ruined Scopes. Paul Smith's College purchased the building in 1961 for its hotel management school, operating it for several decades. It is currently being rehabilitated as part of another ambitious plan to have the village become a major tourist destination.

Originally called the Lakeside Motor Inn, this was among the first of a new generation of hostelries in Lake Placid. Set back from the street, each room opening to a private outdoor sitting area overlooking a broad lawn and Mirror Lake, the Lakeview combined some of the amenities associated with a resort hotel with the conveniences of a contemporary motel. The complex significantly expanded the operations of Peter Roland, whose Homestead Inn, a modest but highly popular establishment had stood just across Saranac Avenue since the early 20th century. That building was replaced by a Hilton Hotel (now High Peaks Resort) in anticipation of the 1980 Olympics.

One of the few Adirondack dude ranches developed during the mid-20th century that is still in operation, Ridin-Hy affords a good sense of what such places were like at that time. Located on the site of a girls' summer camp (Camp Arcady in the Pines), the establishment was inaugurated by New Yorker Ed Carstens, the son of German immigrants, who had fallen in love with the Adirondacks on his first visit at age twelve. Situated on Lake Sherman, the ranch offered swimming and other water activities to supplement horseback riding. Initially there were twelve cabins housing up to thirty guests. A lodge was erected in 1948; it burned in 1982 and was quickly rebuilt. Other guest accommodations were improved during the 1950s and 1960s, with twenty-five cabins constructed on the south side of the basin that extends from the lake to the equestrian area. During the 1960s, nine \u201cchalets\u201d were built on the north side To compete with the other thirty dude ranches in Warren County by the late 1950s Ridin-Hy assumed more of a family orientation. A rodeo began in 1976, and cross-country skiing was added the following year as the camp was transforming into a year-round operation.

A 1909 store that once served the workers' houses and other dwellings in the vicinity makes imaginative use of concrete elements for its second-story porch, fronting the proprietor's living quarters. It stands little altered but underutilized at 3217 Plank Road (CR 7). <\/p>

Standing on Page Hill north of the village center, this building started as a music conservatory for girls under the auspices of Marie Van Hoose. It soon was converted to a summer house, and in 1937 was purchased by Frances and Hamilton Chequer of Speculator for use as a restaurant and lodging. It continues in its former capacity.

This classic roadside establishment began as a residence in the mid-19th century. Soon, however, it was operating as boarding house run by the Henry Rogers family and catering to sportsmen. The western end is the original portion; the lower, two-level segment to the east was probably added in the late 19th century. The building has undergone many 20th-century alterations as a popular restaurant and bar.

North Creek's business center is distinguished from many others in the Adirondacks in the extent of two-tier porches that front its commercial buildings. These appendages were generally applied to such work in warmer climates. Some exceptions could be found in the Adirondacks. What precipitated their use here is unknown. As a group, these buildings manifest a continuity of use as much as appearance. Nathan and Millie Baverman's clothing store at 282 Main dates to 1903. It is now Izzy's Market and Deli. <\/p>

Complementing the nearby store buildings is this equally rare surviving example of an early 19th-century inn in a hamlet setting. The southern portion was constructed by 1810 as a residence; the addition of similar arrangement to north was constructed not long thereafter, presumably as the place was being transformed into a commercial enterprise. At this stage its appearance was similar to Wright's Inn . The two-tiered, colonnaded porch transformed its character to one more closely associated with a hostelry by later generations.

Built by F. S. and W. C. Witherbee in memory of the company's founders, this great stone and wood-frame building cost $70,000 and provided a wide spectrum of facilities for miners and their families. It included a kindergarten, cooking school, sewing club, lending library, savings bank, hospital, auditorium for lectures and social events, clubrooms, billiard room, and meeting rooms. In the early 20th century it also housed some young, newly arrived miners and in 1913 housed strikebreakers. In 1970 it was sold to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which continues to occupy the building. The wood-frame elementary school (1906-07) and concrete-block high school (1916-17) once lay adjacent to the west.

Like so many Adirondack hotels, this one replaced the earlier Lake House (1878-79), built by Cyrus Kellogg after selling the Long Lake Hotel. Following the loss of the Lake House to fire in 1901, Patrick C. Moynehan, a Glens Falls lumberman and business partner with William C. Whitney, commissioned the present building. The brainstorm siding is relatively recent. This establishment and the Long View Lodge are good examples of medium-sized tourist hotels once numerous in the Adirondacks.

Built as Camp Romang, this classic roadside establishment includes a restaurant and bar in the main building, with cabins at the rear. It was constructed for Glenn and Helen Bacon and named after her father, George Romang, who moved to Wilmington in 1935. Inside and out, the design has vaguely Alpine overtones that are most effectively seen when, at dusk, the premises are illuminated by a forest of Christmas lights.

Lake Placid Lodge is an equally spirited reinterpretation of rustic architecture from the turn of the 20th century, although the vocabulary is quite different and the main building alludes to large country houses more than hotels. The establishment lies on the shore of Placid Lake (compensating somewhat for the loss of the nearby Whiteface Inn), where a private camp was built in 1882. After World War II that camp became an inn called Placid Manor. In the mid-1980s it was purchased by David and Christie Garrett, who had turned Wonundra, the Rockefeller camp on Upper Saranac Lake, into a posh hotel. The Garretts' developed their new acquisition as a five-star restaurant and hotel, renaming it Lake Placid Lodge. The establishment burned in 2005. Its much more ambitious successor manifests their goal to bring a new affluent clientele to the area.

Though of recent construction, this locally renowned hostelry has a an unusual and rich past. The core of the original building was erected in 1871 as a house by an early settler, Benjamin Brush, who sold most of his remaining acreage to hoteliers John A. and George A. Stevens. Using her mother's money Clemina Alford Wyckoff purchased the building around 1925 and converted it to a hotel. An enterprising and determined businesswoman, Alford started hotel keeping in her parents Lake Placid house when she was seventeen. She later moved to Massachusetts where married William Rufus Wyckoff, who had become financially well-off for his role in setting up the Fuller Brush Company's system of door-to-door sales. <\/p>
Soon the couple relocated in Lake Placid. While he became active in the Chamber of Commerce, she developed her business enterprise. Soon the Mirror Lake Inn (originally using Melvil Dewey's spelling Mir-a-Lak) became a celebrated place for eating and gathering among locals as well as tourists. Numerous additions and alterations were made prior to World War II, with the mansarded house given an accretive, vaguely colonial, aura. During the Depression and postwar years, when most Lake Placid hotels were experiencing hard times, the Mirror Lake Inn continued to flourish, becoming the community's premier place for eating and overnight accommodation. <\/p>
Eventually Clemina's son Robert was given ownership of the operation. To his mother's dismay (she sued him) he sold it to Edward Weibrecht in 1976. After the main building burned to the ground in 1988, it was reconstructed using a steel frame and other fire-resistant materials, but fashioned along the lines of its predecessor inside and out to evoke a sense of continuity of the place that had had long enjoyed a successful trade. <\/p>
One of the hotel's annexes, Lake House lies directly across the street, survived the fire. Its date of construction is unknown, but it may have been part of the inn's early expansion program in the 1920s.

The core of what was originally named the Little Brown Cabin ranks among the earliest known roadside ventures of log construction within the Blue Line. It was built by a German-American, Hans Braun, shortly before U.S. entry into World War I. This structure remains intact and serves as the main dining room. After World War II, it was purchased by Henry Dietch, who erected the encasing structure and gave the restaurant its present name.

In the middle of World War II a young printing house executive, Walter Isaacson, gave up his career in New York to start a dude ranch, the kind of resort he rightly judged would only increase in popularity with the return of peace. After a futile search for property, he met Earl Woodward, who guided him to a decaying farmstead near Northwoods. Isaacson bought it, adjacent land from Woodward's friend Sven Munck, and eventually more property from Woodward himself. The main lodge was patterned after Woodward's Hidden Valley Ranch , and a number of men who had worked for the developer helped Isaacson construct the building, using logs cut on the property. Woodward also convinced Isaacson to build his own furniture. Unlike many other dude ranches at that time, Painted Pony began to cater to families. Isaacson also inaugurated rodeos, which continue to operate even though the ranch itself closed in 1996.

St. Regis Falls has unfortunately lost much of its architecture as well as its economic base. Among the most significant remnants of its industrial heyday is this commercial establishment, which offered food, drink, and overnight accommodations beginning in the late 19th century. By 1906 it was known as the Albion Hotel, and was later renamed the Riverside Restaurant. Considering its age and use, the building remains relatively intact.

Constructing hotels near to railroad stations to serve passengers traveling on \nbusiness was a common practice in American towns and cities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally built as Mack's Hotel, this is a rare survivor of its kind in the Adirondacks. It was moved across the tracks to the present site in 1905 due to the hazard cause by locomotive sparks. The building was sold to Charles Van Auken in 1908, when it was aggrandized with a two-tier porch, a portion of which is treated somewhat like a portico. The building may also have been enlarged at that time. It remains in operation as a restaurant and inn.

The third hotel to bear the name Sagamore was only completed after a prolonged period. The drive to rebuild after the second Sagamore burned in 1914 met resistance from stockholders and the enterprise was reorganized. The new leadership called for a more modest and intimate building with only thirty rooms. Called Sagamore Club Hotel, it was not realized in the early 1920s. Only a few years later investors led by William Beckers and William Bixby [BL5] successfully argued for a much more ambitious facility and convinced Karl Abbott, head of a major hotel corporation, to run it. The result was a complete transformation \u2013 a sprawling wood-frame pile organized on a butterfly plan to optimize lake views and cross-ventilation. Despite its great size, many aspects of the Colonial Revival design carry domestic overtones, while the giant, semi-circular portico on the southeast face and the tower (vaguely alluding to that of Independence Hall) at the entrance bespeak its institutional role. Even though the new Sagamore opened at the onset of the Depression, the venture proved a success. During the 1980s the physical plant was expanded to accommodate conventions and business retreats.\n

Born in Thurman, Griffing purchased the Adirondack Hotel, which he operated from 1838 to 1846. He subsequently became a prominent lumberman and built tanneries in Johnsburg (1877) and Wells (1880). He bought a relatively modest, one-and-one-half-story house across Main Street from the hotel and aggrandized it with a sizable, temple-front addition around 1855. The dwelling remained in the family until 1979 and later served as a restaurant. In 2014-15 it underwent extensive rehabilitation under new ownership and operatesas Merrill Magee Inn.

What began as a boarding house was purchased by Henry Ashe and his father James in 1888 and considerably enlarged to its present form. They re-christened the establishment the Agricultural Hotel owing to its proximity to Warren County Agricultural Society fairgrounds. Later Henry's son Maurice bestowed his family's name on the establishment. It remained under Ashe ownership until 1972.

Situated well to the south of the hamlet amid a once agricultural area, this house may originally have been part of a prosperous farm. Very little is known about its history save what is indicated by the building itself. The original (east) section is a three-bay, temple-front house probably built between the 1830s and 1850s. Around the 1920s it was aggrandized, probably as a country retreat, with the former fa\u00e7ade now subordinate to a long south elevation, enunciated by a seven-bay porch, the center three bays of which project further as a temple-front porte-cochere. Since the 1950s it has housed a restaurant.

Elk Lake Lodge is an unusual instance where a place developed for sportsmen in the 19th century has continued as a resort into the 21st century. Not long after it was created by damming the East and West inlets in the mid-19th century, Elk Lake became a destination for the former group owing to its remote wilderness setting. By 1878 Myron Bruce from Blue Ridge was running an inn there. Henry Pellitier Jones developed Hunter's Rest nearby a decade later. He also constructed Elk Pond House, using vertically laid logs, an unusual method in the region. In 1919 Emily Alice Darling built two cottages nearby (now part of the lodge), indicating Elk Lake's broadening appeal. Its success as a low-key resort was in large part the result of a later owner, Richard Ernst. In 1963 he acquired some 11,000 acres around the lake from the Finch, Pruyn Paper Company to preserve the lodge's spectacular natural setting. Ernst added new cottages and a large dining hall (1967) overlooking the lake.

As reconstructed, Fort Ticonderoga, proper, consists of the West Barracks, two West Bastions (arrow-like projections from the square plan), and West Ramparts (earth-filled walls in between the bastions), reconstructed in 1909-12; the South Barracks, reconstructed in 1914-15 and 1930-31; the South Bastion, reconstructed in 1919-23; the North Demilune (or Ravelin, semi-bastion, rising in front and independent of the wall), reconstructed in 1929-30; the North Terreplein (level areas on the ramparts between the outer wall and inner parade ground), reconstructed in 1930-33; the East Terreplein, reconstructed in 1940 \u2013 all according to Alfred Bossom's plans. <\/p>
Working in the tradition of 19th- and early 20th-century English church restorers, Bossom took his charge of reconstruction assiduously, determined to create an \u201cauthentic\u201d iteration of the colonial outpost. New masonry work, much of it using stones recovered from the site, was laid on existing foundations (English and French) and as much of the surviving walls was retained as possible. At the same time, the building elevations and interiors are, of necessity interpretative, reflecting contemporary arts-and-crafts sensibilities as much as those of 18th-century military engineering. Bossom supervised the work until around 1915, and that done over the next several decades generally follow his plans. However, he did not envision the full reconstruction of the South Barracks that was eventually undertaken in order to display a growing collection of artifacts.

Next to the Tousley Building , the small, wood-frame building that was originally Milo Miller's store is the oldest of its kind to remain in Saranac Lake and was one of the few emporia operating when E. L. Trudeau arrived around the mid-1870s. Miller sold flour, groceries, sugar, tobacco, and medicines. He was the grandson of Pliny Miller, the second known settler in the community.

Chestertown's commercial buildings testify to the widespread use of wood rather than masonry construction for such work in many Adirondack communities through the 19th century. The fire that destroyed the dry goods store of W. H. and J. B. Remington Company did not curtail the owners from building anew with the same materials. It has recently been rehabilitated as the Bullhouse restaurant. Other wooden store buildings have survived at 6375 Main Street and 25 and 23 Church Street.

Grain merchant Thomas McGuire's store boasted a decorous Greek Revival fa\u00e7ade that has since been modified. The attached dwelling is set back from the road and was likely added around the 1870s. Across Main Street lies a substantially altered general store building that was probably built on speculation around the 1870s-1880s by local carpenter Henry Dornburgh. It was occupied by a succession of merchants before purchase by Frederick T. Johnson in 1939. He ran his business there for at least thirty years.

The Long Lake Hotel, a pioneering establishment that was operating by 1867, occupied this site. Enlarged and remodeled in 1875, the hostelry lasted another thirty years until it burned. A grocery store, the core of the present building, was erected in its stead. John and Lorrie Hosley acquired the property in 1972, gradually expanding the scope of merchandise and embellishing the building with rustic conceits. They also acquired Stewart's Cabins to the rear and converted the units into shops, creating a classic tourist enclave.

This hostelry was buit as the Collins House after its predecessor, the Cedar Creek House (1869-70), was destroyed in a flood. It soon began catering to tourists and later became an important social center for guests at nearby dude ranches, where drinking and dancing were initially discouraged.

Though much has been lost in recent decades either through demolition or remodeling, some portions of the hamlet's industrial center remain. The former gristmill at 100 River Street was built by Dudley Farlin in 1824 and sold the following year. The plant went through a succession of modifications and owners, including Benjamin Burhans, operating until 1967. It was rehabilitated as a restaurant in 1976. <\/p>
