Building a hotel of a kind that was emblematic of a substantial urban center was an audacious move even as the village was experiencing unprecedented prosperity. Scopes sold bonds to most businesspeople in the community and many others as well. With 100 rooms, an arcade, and a grand ballroom and roof garden on the second floor, the six-story hotel was a local sensation. But it was not a financial success and nearly ruined Scopes. Paul Smith's College purchased the building in 1961 for its hotel management school, operating it for several decades. It is currently being rehabilitated as part of another ambitious plan to have the village become a major tourist destination.
","placename":"Saranac Lake","steward":null,"website":"http:\/\/www.hotelsaranac.com","photos":"e7cdd41e-b834-4b17-94bb-81a826707f3d","photos_captions":"Source:AARCH","icon":"Restaurant"}},{"type":"Feature","geometry":null,"properties":{"data_type":"atlas_point","uid":"56bbc93f-0704-4dc9-81cc-db9a6227a125","updated":"April 27, 2018","categories":"Historic and Interpretive","name":"Lee House Hotel","seasons":"Year-round","keywords":"Architectural Site,Historic Building","keyword_summary":"Architectural Site,Historic Building","description":null,"architectural_notes":"
This range of five commercial buildings is the most urban in character to be found in the Adirondacks and manifests Port Henry's importance as a business center during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Lee House hotel actually began as a residence for John A. Lee in 1874. During the 1880s it was enlarged as a three-story hotel. Under the auspices of a new owner, the footprint was doubled in size and a fourth story added in 1911. Closed seventy years later, the building was renovated in 1985 as housing for the elderly. <\/p>
See also Harlan Building ,4316 Main [PH15b], Van Orum and Murdock Block [PH15d], and Foote Block [PH15e].
","placename":"Port Henry","steward":null,"website":null,"photos":"de365473-e973-4c2c-b46a-824d04f5741d","photos_captions":"Source:AARCH","icon":"Historic Building"}},{"type":"Feature","geometry":null,"properties":{"data_type":"atlas_point","uid":"e39334b4-ac75-4954-868e-baa74770ffc4","updated":"May 13, 2015","categories":"Lodging","name":"Lake Placid Summit Hotel Resort and Suites","seasons":"Year-round","keywords":"Hotel,Roadside Lodging","keyword_summary":"","description":"
Conveniently located in downtown Lake Placid.
